A typical Miraphone rotary tuba model number looks like this: 170086A11000. In the middle of it is an "86". Put a 1 in front of that and you have the traditional U.S. model number, 186. A typical piston tuba model number looks like this: 381291513000. The model number we know in the U.S. is 1291.

The difference between otherwise similar rotary and piston tubas is that the initial "1" in the U.S. customary model number is replaced by a "12".

With that, you should be able to figure out which is which. The various versions of each are designated by letters following the model numbers, such as 186A in my first example above, but it's easier to just look for the features you need. If you don't speak German (and I don't), then it helps to know that perinet=piston and messing=brass (as in "goldmessing" vs. just plain-ole "messing"). Korpus=body, ventile=valve, and Schall=bell.
