Harry Barlow should be recognised as the founding-father of the British tradition of orchestral tuba playing. Apart from his links with the LSO and Covent Garden he was also the first tuba player of the (newly formed) BBC Symphony Orchestra in 1930.

His playing and influence were largely responsible for so many interesting and adventurous tuba parts in Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Holst, Walton, Bax and many others in the first decades of the 20th century. He was the John Fletcher of that era and his marvellous playing can still be heard on many old recordings.
