The issue isn't so much mal-training as mal-design. If tubas had their 4th valve lever accessible by the left hand, wouldn't it make all those difficult 4th valve arpeggios much faster? The pinky finger was never designed to press valves with the proper force and conviction that can be obtained with a left hand forefinger...

I've always wondered why you find fifth and sixth valve levers on the left, but seldom 4th except in French tubas.
