Back when I didn't know better, I played performances (in south Texas)day and night once for 21 days in a row without taking precautions against the sun, wind, heat, etc., and by the last gig on the 21st day, my teeth were loose and my lips were bleeding. It was a good thing that was a short gig!
I really started taking to heart the fact that I wasn't indestructible as the pretty young nurse at Ft. Sam Houston started the treatment that essentially peeled my lips. In about 4 days I had fresh, ever-so-sensitive new lips, and in about 2 weeks I was almost back to playing normally.
I'm fine now and have been for years, but will never take playing for granted again. I think it is a gift from God and a privilege to play.
I have played tuba so much in the Atlanta area now that I get cravings for chili-cheese slaw dogs, peach shakes and pecan pie, but I don't consider that a problem ;^)
