Not only is the shank smaller on the non - "L" mouthpiece, but the taper of the shank is also different. Look to see if it's wobbling in the receiver in any way. That wobble would mean that there's a slight gap between the end of the m.p. shank, and the wall of the receiver - not something you'd really want to have. If there's no wobble to it, then you might have just gotten lucky.
