White must have had a sense of humor! I have a couple of pieces of King promotional literature from the early '30s which show Bill Bell with his double Baritone/Tuba - advertised as having cost $1500 to make, which was 5 times the cost of a typical Symphony Bass. It was a beast with two bells (tuba and baritone) and two lead pipes leading to one valve section. They're all gaga over it in the promotional literature, but from everything I have heard the horn was a real first class dog.

It's interesting to note that most of the names we remember from the first half of the century besides Bell -- think Helleberg, Geib, Kuhn, Tarto as examples -- played Conns. Jacobs, of course, became famous with the Yorks, but Conns seemed to be what most players preferred.
