Hi, An exercise I came up with goes like this:

starting on f just below the staff, play descending chromatic scale to B natural and back up, slurring in slow triplets. (I liken this to a slow glissando on the trombone). then do the same starting a half step lower starting on E down to Bb and back. then Eb down to low A and back up, etc. Keep going down by half steps until you can't go any lower. Not only does it help you loosen up the chops it also makes you learn your chromatic fingerings in the low register with 4th or 5th valve work as needed.
My low register always needs to be "warmed up" in order for me to play down there easily and this is one exercise that helps me do so. ken k
