I was in a similar situation, and decided to refurbish my Mirafone 188 with a new slightly larger nickel-silver leadpipe and adjustable gap receiver, both installed by Dillon Music in Woodbridge, NJ. These modifications improved the usefulness of the horn, along with a Terry Warburton custom bronze mouthpiece (copied after a modified Bach 12). Warburton makes bronze mouthpieces for Dillon music as well.

However, I decided I still needed another tuba for certain situations, and I went with a Meinl Weston Model 2145 piston valve tuba. Other possibilities were the Kalison Darryl Smith Model, or the B & S Model PT-3 or PT-4. I think these horns add a different tone in the middle and upper registers, and a little more facility in playing faster passages.
