The DVS system is basically what sometimes used to be called the ball and socket system. It is much quiter and faster than the old Mirafone curved-arm linkages. The S-series does not have nickel (or nickel-plated) joints, and does not have the nickel tone ring. In my opinion the these parts, the tone ring especially, detract from the horn's ability to project sound. Part of the reason that I sold my 186-5U was that it tended to get buried in large ensembles, although for solo and quintet work it did have a nice sound.
