I make no claims to having in depth knowledge of acoustics, but I don't believe "double pedals" really exist in an acoustic sense. The "technique" involves negating every other vibration or slapping the tonge to simulate the frequency, and allowing the mind to fill in the desired pitch.

I think Tom hit it right on the head when he explained how the lowest extremes of the instruments, with all the valves down, had physical limits. When I stated that all tubas have the same chromatic range, I didn't even consider going down to F a fifth below the CC tubas pedal C. Apart from Encounters II I have never had an occasion to take an instrument down there.
