A friend at a local high school has asked for my input on buying several new horns for the school. Obviously he is looking for affordable horns, around $4500, 4/4 size, 4 rotary valves, BBb. The horns he is considering are the Meinl Weston 25, Miraphone s-186BB, and the Yamaha YBB-641. I have played a Miraphone 186CC and would assume the intonation tendencies are the same on the various partials, likewise I have played the Yamaha horn a little bit. My time with the Yamaha was limited and I really haven't played much on a Meinl. If anyone could let me know about the tendencies of these horns as well as any deficiencies in manufacturing I would appreciate it. I would also be interested in thoughts on the Jupiter tubas, the price is right but if they are similar to their student trombones and clarinets I'm not interested. Thanks for your thoughts.
