I agree with Daryl. I play tuba in a community band. Most of what I know about playing music well, practicing music, and really working music in practice (as opposed to just playing) came from spending three years in a college choir, including performances at ACDA regional and National conventions. This was the best music group on our campus and I feel lucky to have been a part of it. Actually, I stumbled into it and had to find a way to rise to the level the conductor demanded.
I also met and heard some really good students, and at a small college you can see real talent quickly. The best student performer I heard was a singer who has gone on to do opera.
These are things you won't find in a practice room.
