That's some really GREAT advice from Russell! I'd just like to add one thing:
I did all of my tuba shopping at the Midwest band and orchestra Clinic in Chicago. Many people advised me that the acoustical level in a hotel would not be very good (lots of other people playing horns at the same time...loudness). However, I did not experience this at all. In fact, many of the times i sat down to play, I was the only one there.
With a convention, you don't have to go to all the different companies, they come to you. The ONLY drawback I see, is that there are not very many used horns at the conventions.
