The range is from pedal note AAA up to g above the staff. The general tessitura is somewhat lower than we normally encounter in pieces written for Eb/F tuba. John Stevens did write this piece specifically with the particular player (Pokorny) and horn (CSO York CC) in mind. However, in an earlier post (see Re: Re: Top 5 List - "Essentials"), Jay Bertolet stated that the Vaughan Williams, which was written for bass tuba, should be attempted by every serious tubist, even on CC tuba. So perhaps when the published score is available (anybody know when John Stevens' "Journey" is to be put into print?), you can judge for yourself.
