This morning, in commemoration of the today's anniversary of the birth of Arnold Jacobs 85 years ago, WMFT broadcast 2 excerpts from the new "Arnold Jacobs--Portrait of an Artist" CD: "The musician plays the instrument" interview, and the home practice tape of the first movement of the Vaughan Williams Concerto. This was followed immediately by Jacobs' recording of the VW with Daniel Barenboim and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Although the semiprivate recording with Henry Masur conducting is purportedly a better performance than the commercially released one with Barenboim (the story goes that Mr. Jacobs was unaware that this run-through would constitute the ultimate release without opportunity to re-record or edit portions), Mr. Jacobs' seemingly effortless, sweet sound still comes through. That high Ab just floats!

At Gene Pokorny's performances of the John Stevens Concerto this past weekend, tribute was paid to Arnold Jacobs by having the special exhibit of Arnold Jacobs memorabilia on display in the Ballroom at Symphony Center.

May the memory of Arnold Jacobs continue to inspire all of us.
