I have a couple of horns in raw brass and they're just fine after several years (10+). I would respectfully disagree with the suggestion to polish the horn with Brasso because that removes metal from wherever you polish. Brasso is an abrasive and shines the brass by removing the top layer of oxidized metal. I decided that this was more harm than good so I never polish my raw brass instruments. And nobody has looked at me funny yet because I match all the french horn and trombone players in the section. And these tubas don't smell either! Geez, maybe that's because I don't march around the streets of South Florida with a huge target that says "Throw garbage in me!" That's right, I play in classier places than that...

Or, so I'm told. ;-)

My opinion for what its worth...
