I've used it to good advantage on long exposed notes. Two spots that come to mind are the long B at the end of Tchaik. Romeo and Juliet and the long D in the Mahler 1st. solo. Also there is a long note somewhere in Bruckner 4 that was helped along with a circular breath. Otherwise learning some fast "sniff breath" techniques can be very useful along with good 'ol long tones.
