Maybe I've been in danger since '84. I got sick of the cr--py factory lacquer job when my B&S was a few months old. It kept flaking off and leaving tiny lacquer bits in the fibers of my (new then) tux trousers, so OFF went the lacquer.
A patina is just as good a protective coating as lacquer or plating.
As to conductors...I haven't seen any conductors that look as good as my brown tuba, so I guess that I and conductors are "even".
