If just the end broke off of one of your springs, "ALLS YOU HAVE TO DO IS": unwind the broken end a couple of turns, then yank on that end (after it is in the correct position) until the spring tension pleases you. Once there, tuck it under - like the other side.
A couple of the springs on my tuba broke at their ends...about ten years ago. Those springs are still in place, and compliments abound re: my tuba's "valve action".
You ain't got no problem that a pair o' pliers won't fix.
