There was all that publicity a couple of years ago about Kenny G and his 45 minute Johnny-One-Note act, only to be supplanted by someone else who achieved the artistic zenith by playing a note of even longer duration. All in the service of St. Cecelia and the Muses, I suppose.
OTOH, according to the Spring 2000 issue of the TUBA Journal, Chester Schmitz did break the world's record for a sustained note on a subcontrabass tuba. However, I highly doubt that he used circular breathing on that beast.
