Box size pricing is supposed to be waived by Amtrak for musical instruments, check their website. This means you pay by weight only, in 50-pound increments. My first Amtrak shipment came from Chicago to San Jose, it was a 5/4 tuba in a wood crate big enough
to use for my 6/4 Holton. cost with a LOT of insurance, under 60 bucks.
When I got the Holton it was shipped in a sturdy cardboard box full of peanuts foam,
delivered to my door by a freight carrier. I forget exactly, but I think the seller spent $130? (from Texas)
