Yamaha 621 F - 5th Valve Placement?

Since the YFB-621 is equipped with a 5th valve, I have always wondered why Yamaha does not offer their YCB-621(C horn) with a 5th valve option.

I am considering having a 5th valve surgically added to my YCB-621! I have a few questions:

1) First of all, am I NUTS to consider this mutilation of my horn? (I would especially appreciate hearing from anyone who has experience in making alterations on horns, for this one!) The horn plays beautifully, with the exception of intonation in the extreme low register. I play this horn almost exclusively in brass quintet, where the literature that I come across does not really exploit that register much at all.

2) Having gotten question #1 out of the way, can anyone tell me where, on the 621 F, the 5th (rotary) valve is located? Is it before or after the piston valve cluster?

3) Any actual measurements would be appreciated!

4) Is the bore of the 5th valve .689, like the pistons? Or is it wider to accommodate the low register, and keep it from being stuffy?

Any observations/criticisms welcome!!!

Thanks,

Larry Zaidan
