Here's a great cd for you, just out on Decca (458899). Two of Hindemith's "other" hits. Sinfonia Serena, and Die Harmonie der Welt. Herbert Blomstedt and the Leipzig Gewandhaus.
Herbie's as cranked up as he's ever been, and the orchestra wails. Both works feature the tuba prominently, though in the case of "Harmonie," that borders on understatement. And whoever or whomever is occupying the chair in Leipzig is doing so very capably.
Unfortunately, neither work is a "hit" because both fall through the net of expedient repertoire of career chasing conductors and corporate minded managers. "Harmonie" could easily qualify as Hindemith's ultimate masterpiece, and while "Sinfonia" doesn't rise to quite that level, it is still a strong and highly appealing work.

Those of you in a position to pitch or otherwise lobby repertoire in your orchestras should check these pieces out.

Any conductors lurking out there? Get off your lazy butts and learn these pieces!

The rest, whatever level or position, get this CD WHEREVER or HOWEVER you shop, and get yourself psyched on some new, unfamiliar, and highly gratifying reperoire.
