I would say a mini-disc. It doesn't record as well as a DAT, but it sure is handy, compact, and light years better than any cassette recorder. Find a like-new fancy current model Sony on eBay. I grabbed one for my kid (for exactly the same purpose for which you are desiring one) off of eBay for about $135. My daughter told me that model is $350 (new) from the most competitive places.
Later on, buy a really good consumer-grade mic to go with it ($200 or so)...Two, if you wish to record stereophonically.
