The recording which Brian referred to was made by Audiophile Records, a small independent firm located in Saukville, Wisconsin. Their mission was to provide audio hobbyists, a hardy breed of do-it-yourself builders and tweakers, with recordings that would be better than your average commercial release, which was usually cut and eq'd to be playable on mid to low-fi commercial phonographs. Those who missed the era of "records" may have no idea of the difference between "record player" and "audio system" in those days. RCA did pioneer stereo recording and built up an impressive library of stereo recordings before the development of a practical stereo record for the home.

Audiophile recorded in mono, and I believe the CSO brass recording is even earlier than '54. Audiophile also issued a recording by the CSO Woodwind Quintet, which featured Phil Farkas on horn. Their specialty was pipe organ. They were good!
