I just made this trip a few months ago and it is a bit difficult if you have never used the Swiss Rail system before. From Bern to Sumiswald there are two line changes I believe. From Sumiswald to a big city is easy (to Bern was nonstop), but going to Sumiswald is a little bit different. The Swiss Rail people are very helpful and friendly, so your best bet is to ask a representative at the train station. The ride should take a little over an hour, changes included, but believe me, the tour of the Hirsbrunner factory is more than worth it. It isn't that big, nor is the town, but the people as well as Peter are extremely generous with helping you out.
