The reason I bought the Hirsbrunner was because I think it is a little easier to play fast passages cleanly on a piston tuba. I was doing the John Williams with my orchestra that year and I have now done it also with the Army Band Orchestra and in solo recitals about ten times. I feel it is cleaner with the pistons. My Alex F tuba has some of the best intonation I have ever heard. The only alternate fingering I used was third valve for the low D. And the low register on that Alex is fantastic. When I submitted my tape for the job here at Illinois the trombone teacher asked which horn I used on which piece, he could not hear a difference between them.
