But I didn't see him playing a Sousaphone in the Chicago Symphony.

I agree sadly but wholeheartedly that a non-musical person cannot make music on a $15,000 horn. But a good player might be limited by a poor horn.

I hear the same thing in the bicycle racing and triathlon world: It's the motor not the bike, and so on. But I don't see the top pros racing at the Hawaii Ironman on department-store imitation mountain bikes.

And I don't really want the world to be limited to 186-4U's, as much as I like mine in its place. It isn't about who is better (as in leveling the playing field), it is about the sound that we dream about in our heads coming out of the horn. Some achieve their dream and others don't, and we don't all have the same sound in our dream, but we all dream about the sound.
