Generally, the way it works is this. There are three items on this menu: loud, low, and long. Any two in combination can be done effectively, but not all three. If there aren't many other instruments playing at the same time, how much volume is really needed to be effective (read: musical)?
Even the players with the largest lung capacities would need a place to breathe in that situation.
