Simple math. For every drop of an octave double the amount of air used (roughly)Low G on tuba uses 4 times as much air as low G ( their low A) on trumpet. Arnold Jacobs said low, loud playing on tuba can use upto 120 litres of air per minute. The "average" male has a lung capacity of around 5 litres you can work out the rest. I'm fortunate I have a very large "wind bag" (vital capacity) of nearly eight litres and I couldn't do ff low G tied for eight bars. Just incase your conductor gets stroppy!
