A variation on the rent-a-car is to buy a good used car in Texas, drive it to NY and resell there. If you can fund this transaction up front, you may break even, or come out a little bit ahead. Historically, many people in the Northeast have been wiling to pay a premium for used cars from warmer climates, where salt is not used on the roads in winter. I have known people who swear by cars from the southeast; not sure about Texas -- just another stray thought.
Of, course, if you wound up having to garage it in NYC for any period of time, all bets are off.
