I did some freezing outdoors gigs some years back, we had to play in -30 centigrades (dont know how much that is in american whatevers), and we had to get rid of all the valve oil in our instruments and replace it with 96% alcohol (yes, that's true, it doesn't freeze that easily). And always have a bit of the alcohol handy, in case the moisture in our breaths froze in the instrument. (a swig for me, a few drops for the instrument....) We were also given some lip balm that apparently was made for polar researchers. It wasn't too pleasant, but it did the job and kept our lips from cracking in the cold and everything. One person didn't put it on and got his cornet stuck to his face!
