Nope, it's not just you.

I also use an SM3. The small-shanked tuba mouthpieces create uncontrollable intonation problems on my Besson, and also produce a characteristic tuba sound (except that it is thin as you would expect on so small a horn). The SM3 is large enough not to confuse the lips of at least this tuba player while still maintaining the characteristic euphonium sound. That is--as long as I play it properly. The SM4 was just too small for me.
