I've now read the thread on this subject from the end of May, and it seems to me that Mark's and Klaus' reasoning are on the same line as my second hypothesis: that adding mass dampens and lowers the resonance frequencies and amplitude of the metal body. The result would be less disturbance of the intended vibration of the air column. If this makes the big difference to playing qualities that several people have reported, the conclusion must be that the average instrument has lots of disturbing, non-musical resonances. Making instruments heavier and more rigid would be a general principle to follow. Is this the common view?
