This is my second favorite Mahler symphony. I own three recordings, CSO/Solti 1970, NYP/Walter 1947, and VPO/Bernstein 1987. I don't really have a favorite among them although I listen to the Chicago one most. They are all very good, and each interpretation is so different. Bernstein has a very rich interpretation, stretches out the phrases like anything, and recording quality is most excellent. Solti is probably the closest to a "generic" Mahler 5 interpretation but for me has the best tempi, recording quality is a bit less on this one. The Walter might be the closest to what Mahler himself would have conducted, Bruno takes the adagietto in 7:43(darn fast), unfortunatly recording quality is the pits. Well that's a brief synopsis of my Mahler recordings all good for listening pleasure. But you don't have to take my word for it...(Da dum dump)
