I had mine out my junior year of college (1989). About 2-3 weeks before they were removed I started to have some major pain in my lower jaw when I would play. Turns out all of my wisdom teeth were impacted and pushing the other teeth forward. I schedualed the surgery for the first day of spring break. It took about 3 days and several good pain killers to get over the effects of the surgery. After seven days I had the stitches taken out and the oral surgeon said I could start playing right away. I was a little sore for mabey 1-2 days but after that it was as if the procedure never took place. Plus no more jaw pain! I say do it now while you have the time to recover before college.
