I really had to work on this same technique in April for Mahler 6....gliss from a 2nd line Bb to an A below the staff, I think. The conductor, Ben Zander, really rode my ass about it after the first rehearsal because it was one of his favorite moments in the symphony, and apparently he has had a hell of a time getting the tubists he conducted to do it "right." I found two different methods:

1. 1/2 valve it down, as Sean mentioned
2. Basically lip slur and "false tone" it down through the breaks.

After some work, I found the "false tone" method to work best, and the conductor was thoroughly pleased with the final product...note, it did take some work! Sounded much more "trombone-esque." Try both and see what you like best.
