I ran into exactly the same thing with my custom German E. Schmid french horn. It had a "bland" sound, and I was the third owner due to the previous owners' not being able to "get used to" the horn. It took me a full year to learn to play that horn; I can't describe what I learned to do, but now it is the most versatile instrument I've ever played. I can get dark, bright, sonorous, edgy...and it sounds really fine on recordings, so I'm not just fooling myself. I don't know how this realtes to Hirsbrunners, but I thought you'd be interested in the parallel.
