Some years ago the New Haven Symphony got ahold of the missing "Blumine" movement of the Mahler and decided to be the first to record the complete symphony. According to rumors, Ormandy was furious. So anyway, I got to play that Frere Jaques solo, and I did a decent job on the first take, I think. But the oboist had a problem, so we took it again from the middle, (starting on the high A) and they spliced it in. It had not occurred to me that I might be asked to start there cold, and I wish I had prepared better for starting on that note. But the experience did reinforce my heathy disrespect for that particular conductor, which worked to my advantage in terms of nerves.
