Whilst I agree that music does need to breathe, I feel that it is worth pointing out that it doesn't need to breathe as often as we do. Other wind players can hold a phrase for longer than we can without it appearing that the phrase should have breathed.
Also, it could be argued that a phrase can breathe in less time than we can. As a random example, the 1st movement of the 1st Bach Cello Suite is quite difficult for breathing when played on the tuba, but when played on the cello, it isn't generally considered a steady, unending stream of notes.
If it makes a difference to the way you interpret this post, I can circular breathe, but rarely use it whilst playing the tuba.
