Leadpipes can be moved and bent to the shape you need. Thumb rings can be moved. If those things make the result a workable compromise, then you should consider them.

As to hand position, there are things you can do with that, too. I put an extension button made for me by John Swenson on the fourth valve of my York Master, which corrected for the fact that my arm is too high for the design of the instrument.

Slide positioning is another matter. It took me a couple of months to find a way to hold my tuba before my left hand felt at all comfortable. It might just be a matter of giving yourself time to get used to it.
