Holding the valves down should be harmless if you only do it when in transport. You'd have to leave 'em tied down for a long time before losing springs. Like weeks, not hours.

Sometimes I tie 'em down in transport, other times I don't. If I know I'll be going through lots of hallways, doorways or crowds, I take the trouble to do it. I'm pretty careful, but (AT)#it happens. No misses a gig 'cuz of weak springs, but a kinked valve . . .

Besides, replacement springs are WAY cheaper than a valve repair! It's easy to keep a couple in your gig bag.
