A clock spring is generally a flat band of metal wound into a coil. The spring effect comes from it being wound tight and wanting to return to less tight. Older rotary valves have clock springs, newer ones have wire springs wrapped in a spiral. I think the newer ball and socket linkage, as opposed to the older "S" linkage, is much more instrumental in making the newer valves lighter and faster than the newer springs are.
