Today's Birmingham News has a nice article on the Alabama Symphony Orchestra's tuba audition. Written for a general newspaper audience, it has surprisingly few howlers.

Nice quotes from: Stephen Dumaine, Jerome Stover, Vurl Bland, and Paul Jackson (the ASO personnel manager).

53 tubists started the day at 8a.m. last Sunday. The second round started at 8p.m., with 12 advancing. "...six were chosen to go on. Then three, then two." And then, the screen came down. Dumaine was offered the job at 12:30a.m. Monday.

Since 1995, Dumaine reports one year in Spain, one year in Miami, two years in San Antonio, and two years in Houston. The article describes him as "...a free-lance musician and part-time fitness trainer..."
