I think the Ideal Dixieland instrument is a large bell-front BBb (recording bass). It is also the most cumbersom and difficult to move around. I have an old Besson 4-valve compensating bell front that is perfect. The sound is big round and projected with very little effort.
Many of the Dixie gigs I play, however, require "strolling" or frequent moving. These are gigs such as store openings, golf tornaments, etc. For those I use a very small BBb (Yamaha 103). It gets the job done, but you have to work harder.
