Yes and no; a nickel finish, being actually metal plating, is certainly more substantial than lacquer, which is paint. Nickel does oxidize, however, especially where it makes contact with skin. My experience has been that lacquer, while not as "tough", is less subject to deterioration from skin chemistry.
