I love playing my horn. My dream all through high school was to land a job with a major orchestra. But prudently I chose to pursue a non-musical career. I've made a lot of money doing other things that I'm good at. Now that I'm pushing 40 I have enough money to buy whatever kinds of tubas I want (and that my wife will allow) and have enough free time to play in several community ensembles. I'd still love to play in ANY orchestra (paying or not), but I'm enjoying making music AND can provide well for my family. I'm not saying everyone should do as I did. But sometimes it's smarter to keep your first love as a hobby and pursue other options to make a living.
I wish you all the best whichever directions you end up going.
