I have an amazing '73 Jazz, and I have to admit that I used to carry it and play it (about 50/50, depending on the tune being played) on dixie jobs with my tuba. I had a nice upright with magnetic and contact pick-ups, but I couldn't/wouldn't carry it and my tuba when touring.
About three years ago, I finally purchased an "acoustic-electric" bass. I immediately restrung it with EB flatwound strings. It sounds "almost" like an upright bass with the size and ease of an electric bass. On the low E string in particular, I would say that it sounds 97% (??) like an amplified upright bass.
Most of the time, however, I show up for jobs with only the EEb helicon.
