Yeah, now that I pulled the part out, it is an "awfulcleide" part. I have no idea why he wrote other than to add weight to the trombones or volume to the basses. Same thing struck me when I played "Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage" by Mendelssohn. Why work this hard for basically nothing? That was really pretty music too, just would rather have been listening instead of worrying about the long high slurs.
