Sometimes it's good to swim against the stream, Jim. The interesting psychological question is, how far are we influenced by an assumed prestige value besides all pragmatic considerations? In this context the question is applicable to the pitch selection - and possibly also to the tuba brand name selection. As for the additional prestige value, I think of a certain Swiss brand for example; but why should the brass horn market differ from the automotive or the watch popularity hierarchy or any other brand name depending market in regard to this aspect!
I heard of many super quality tubas of relatively less known brand names being at least equivalent to the few top positioned ones in the "charts" of polularity, but they are only wanted by well informed insiders who then of course can take advantage of relatively low prices.
If you would try to sell a car on the Mercedes quality level without the world famous radiator star etc. - maybe you would find it also harder to get rid of it. ???
Maybe many amateurs (in their subconscious) identify themselves with the symphony pros and their high prestige value - who in the majority of cases play CC and F as well as prefer certain brands of horns, whereas community brass bands for example may not always share that exquisite authority and image. ???
